Canine Myotherapy
(K9 Massage Therapy)
Supporting Comfort, Mobility & Wellbeing
At SafePaws, canine myotherapy is delivered using a calm, ethical and assessment-led approach, with each treatment tailored to the individual dog.
Canine myotherapy, often referred to as canine massage therapy, supports mobility, comfort and musculoskeletal wellbeing through observation, movement assessment, palpation and hands-on treatment.
The aim is to identify areas of tension, restriction or compensation within the soft tissues that may be affecting how a dog moves and feels. By supporting soft tissue function, canine myotherapy can help promote more comfortable and efficient movement, and is often used alongside other therapies such as physiotherapy and hydrotherapy as part of a collaborative approach to care.
Throughout every session, your dog's comfort, choice and wellbeing remain at the centre of the treatment process.

Initial Consultation
The initial consultation is an assessment appointment and no treatment is carried out during this session.
This appointment allows time to build a picture of your dog's current mobility, posture and movement patterns. A detailed history will be taken, followed by environment/movement observation, video and photographic assessment, and hands-on palpation to assess soft tissue health and musculoskeletal function.
The information gathered helps identify areas of tension, compensation or restriction that may be influencing your dog's comfort and movement.
Findings will be discussed with you, and if appropriate, recommendations will be made regarding a course of canine myotherapy treatment.

Initial Treatment Course
Following assessment, an initial course of three personalised treatment sessions recommended, usually spaced 7–10 days apart.
This allows your dog time to respond to treatment while enabling progress and changes to be monitored over a series of appointments. Each session is tailored to your dog's individual needs and comfort levels on the day.
Treatments are carried out in a calm, respectful and dog-centred manner, with your dog's choices helping to guide the treatment process. Wherever possible, sessions take place at floor level or in the location where your dog feels most comfortable and safe.
Following completion of the initial treatment course, a report will be provided to your veterinary surgeon outlining findings, treatment provided and recommendations for ongoing support.
This helps maintain continuity of care for your dog.

Maintenance Treatments
Following completion of the initial treatment course, maintenance sessions are typically recommended every 4–6 weeks, although this will vary depending on your dog's individual needs, lifestyle and stage of life.
These appointments provide an opportunity to monitor changes in mobility, posture and movement, identify developing compensatory patterns and support ongoing musculoskeletal health and wellbeing.
Regular maintenance sessions can be particularly beneficial for senior dogs, active and sporting dogs, and those managing long-term conditions, helping to support comfort, function and quality of life.
As with all appointments, maintenance treatments are tailored to your dog's individual needs and comfort levels on the day, supporting ongoing mobility, comfort and wellbeing.
